Karen has spent over 3 decades specializing in infection prevention and control. Currently Karen is the Infection Prevention Consultant for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) Federal Survey and Certification Group. Prior to joining CMS, Karen spent 23 years at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine as the Associate Director of the Statewide Program for Infection Control and Epidemiology (SPICE) providing infection prevention consultation, education, and outbreak assistance to all HCFs provider types and state regulatory agencies. She is a Clinical Instructor at UNC School of Medicine. Karen currently serves on the Association for Professional in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC)Board of Directors. She has received several awards including the SHEA Advanced Practice Award and the North Carolina Old North State Award for Service to the citizens of the state. She has lectured nationally and internationally on the topics of Infection prevention for all provider types. Karen is a Fellow in both APIC and SHEA. She received her BSN from Indiana University and her MS in Healthcare Epidemiology from the University of Virginia.
